BSkyB makes big bid for VMTV

BSkyB is believed to have made an offer for Virgin Media’s seven TV channels at a rate 60% higher than other bidders, according to reports.

It is understood that the satellite broadcaster, which is 39% owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, has made an offer of an estimated £160m for the channels.

Other bidders thought to be in the frame include Channel 4, RTL, Time Warner and NBC Universal. But the nearest bid to BSkyB’s is closer to the £100m mark.

Virgin Media this month unveiled plans to rebrand its TV channel Virgin1 with a new logo and on- and off-air identity

It is set to launch on June 9 and has been led by Virgin Media Television’s recently appointed brand and marketing director, Jeff Dodds.

Sky recently reported that it had attracted 80,000 new customers in the first three months of the year, while a cut in the cost of Sky HD helped it attract 243,000 new customers

Sky and Virgin Media were not available for comment at the time of publication.
