Shoppers have necessarily had to become more 'cash-savvy' and the deal culture is now well entrenched in the consumer mind-set, and will continue so at least until a change in the economic climate occurs?? Perceptionally premium and value can sit side-by-side and will probably continue to be driven by occassionality rather than economics. With regard to the 'Packaging comment', isn't that sort of rather obvious really!
