Samsung redesigns Galaxy Tab to fend off Apple sales ban

Samsung is altering the design of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 to beat a court injunction obtained by Apple that banned sales of the tablet because it looked too much like the iPad.

The South Korean-based company says it has redesigned the metal frame and moved the speakers of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, after a court ruling banned sales in Germany in September.

The altered product, Galaxy Tab 10.1n, will be available from 21 November, only in Germany.

Apple is embroiled in several other patent disputes in courts across the world with Samsung, with the former company claiming Samsung has copied the design of its tablets and the iPhone.

Samsung has also tried to counter Apple’s lawsuits with attempts to ban sales of the iPhone 4S in Germany, Italy, France and Australia. The two are set to meet in a Paris court today (18 November), where a judge will rule on whether the iPhone 4S should be blocked from sale in France.

There are now approximately 30 cases between Apple and Samsung worldwide.

Apple is also involved in legal disputes with HTC, Nokia and Microsoft, which is challenging Apple’s trademark of the term “app store”.

Samsung has a 10% share of the UK smartphone market, according to comScore. Apple dominates the sector with a 26.8% share.

  • Apple seems to be bent on marketing dumbness!

Wonder how much harm the generic use of the term Hoover did the company?

The Dyson in our household is still known as the Hoover!

  • Agreed!
We've got a Galaxy Tab in our house (which we love) and it gets called the "iPhone" by the wife and kids!
