Made in Britain logo launched

A Made in Britain marque has been launched in the hope of boosting sales of British-made products and services.

It is hoped the logo - designed to be used in marketing campaigns, on labels and on websites - will help shoppers identify goods of British origin.

The campaign to encourage use of the marque is being led by British kitchen manufacturer Stoves. Activity was developed by the company’s PR agency Umpf.

Creation of the marque follows research that 67% want a seal of approval that products were made here. It also showed that almost half of British shoppers did not know which brands could claim they were made in Britain.

The campaign is backed by several MPs. Companies such as Cains Beer, Imperial Bathrooms and ScreenTek have agreed to use of the logo.

  • I am all for anything that helps support UK manufacturing, in fact I even blog about British made products ( http://www.makeitbritish.co.uk ) but running a student competition for something like this just sums up how much the government are actually prepared to put behind it.
The font on the logo was also changed from it's original design, and to me the two parts just don't work together.
It will be interesting to see how many companies actually adopt it.

  • Why didn't they just use a union jack - something everyone would recognise easily and no need to invent!

Personally I think this looks more French flag inspired than British?

  • There is a typo on the logo. It says Britain rather than Iceland.

    Sure Shome Mishtake?

  • I'm all for this too. We make a wonderful British product (www.shropshiregranola.co.uk) and I know that being local and British is very important to our customers. I would definitely be interested in putting this on our packaging.

  • Who will maintain the use of the logo and give consumers confidence? Misuse can quickly destroy a symbol; creating a symbol is easy, acturally introducing its proper use is complex!

  • An excellent idea that Wallace Cameron the largest independent first aid supplier in the UK will be proud to display on our website and catalogues. Our innovative first aid dispensers are made in the UK, and we are proud to manufacture and develop our products in Wishaw outside Glasgow.

  • Promoting British is long overdue and gets my support and praise. It's a shame the Union Jack wasn't adopted as the logo. How difficult can it be?

  • I find this logo awkward and somehow old fashioned, why not a union flag ? - clean, simple and thus more appropriate to different product categories. I really wish we could achieve something, look at the Swiss, they seem to do this sort of thing the best by simply using the Swiss flag. A heavyweight backer may also be needed, and possibly an ' Engineered in Britain' version, as there are many great 'British' products who employ high earning head office staff in the UK in sales, marketing, design etc and are critical to the economy, we don't just want to make stuff, we want to own, design, manufacture and sell it!

  • Why can't they just use the old "This one's made in Britain" tagline they used right into the 1980's that simply had a Union Jack or a Bulldog on it. Hoover used to use it (before they shipped everything overseas that is) I have nothing against imports, but I would like the choice to see what was British made especially given these times of hardship and austerity in order to give a boost to this economy. At the end of the day, buying our onw products to pay our own people cannot be a bad thing at all.

  • It was such a great idea to have one logo, that would be internationally recognised and that British manufacturers could proudly feature on their products and marketing material. So, what's wrong with our own Union Jack ? My 1st impression was how French it looked. Someone else has mentioned Iceland. I'd prefer to fly our flag, on my products, so will be looking for an alternative.
