Toyota ad to star Supergrass’ Gaz Coombes

Toyota is launching an ad campaign starring Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes to promote its Yaris model to young women.

Toyota says it is targeting women in their 20s and 30s who are protective of their cars with the strapline: “Toyota Yaris: Treat it with Respect”

The ad is set to the Supergrass track “Pumping on the Stereo”.

It shows a young man asking his girlfriend to take a photo of him with his “musical hero” Coombes after spotting him in the street. However she misses the photo moment in an act of revenge for him previously making a mess of her Yaris.

The TV campaign, created by Saatchi & Saatchi, breaks on 1 January. It will be supported with press advertising and a digital campaign developed by Glue Isobar.

  • Surprising for Gaz Coombs to star in an ad, and a car ad at that. In the early 90's, he turned down £1m from Armarni to star in their ads (they went with David James instead).

  • Surely this is just an extension to the 2007 campaign by Saatchi & Saatchi when the new Yaris first launched? Has this been on the back burner during all Toyotas well documented problems in the last year of just an example of lazy creative?

  • "I want to leave Supergrass in the place where people remember it and I don't want to dilute it and f**k it up." Gaz Coombes

A little too late for that hey Gazzer!
