Toyota crisis set to deepen after engine faults emerge

Toyota is facing another backlash after the automotive firm warned of a potential fault with the engines of about 270,000 cars it has sold worldwide.

The fault, which also affects some of its Lexus models, could see engines stalling while being driven. The company has not yet started a global recall.

The warning is the latest problem to hit the world’s largest carmaker, which has recalled more than 10 million vehicles globally.

Earlier this month, Toyota began rolling out its “Your Toyota is My Toyota” advertising campaign, which features real employees championing the marque following its global recall crisis.

The campaign includes a TV ad and full-page press ads fronted by staff from Toyota Manufacturing UK, promising to “pick up imperfections that are smaller than a human hair.”

The ad stresses: “There’s no better method for ensuring the perfect panel than having that personal touch.”

Worries about further reputational damage and the costs of a potential recall pushed Toyota shares down by more than 2% as news emerged this morning.

  • American Manufacturers have always been under the microscope regarding matters like this. Now that it is on Toyota, you have to wonder if their reputation is not really well deserved after all.

  • In my deepest feelings, I feel like Toyota is part of this Japanese machine that has been taking over American inventions like the radio, TV, microwave, video games, computers and etc. We invent them; someone else profits from them kind of feeling. So unfortunately, I am glad that Toyota is not taking over the American car market as well and little glitches like this show that they are not all that.

  • I take your point Virgil that the US were the first to mass produce for the consumer: "radio, TV, microwave, video games, computers and etc" but to say they invented them is stretching it a little! I would suggest that video games is the only one (and I'm sure the Russians would have something to say about that)
