The beauty of mobile is more than just looks
Research by TNS reveals content and apps are rising in importance as the reasons for buying a new mobile phone, but brands must match new social technology with usability and appearance.

Mobile phone applications have the potential to redefine the way consumers view and purchase mobile devices - as well as the brands that advertise on them. A new report suggests that marketers should take note of apps because they may well become the future of how consumers interact with phones.
The annual TNS Technology Global Telecoms Insights study looks at how 27,000 consumers around the world are using their phones. Thirteen per cent of people already consider content and apps to be the single most important factor in their next mobile purchase decision.
More traditional measures of mobile phone desirability, such as the brand or network, are now the most important factor for just 12% of respondents. “Content and apps are already critical factors for a large proportion of people,” says Stephen Yap, group director at TNS Technology.
“Of course, the look and feel of the device is the most important factor at the moment but we believe that will start to decline.”
Yap notes that 29% of respondents are still swayed by the look of the phone, but adds: “The ability to personalise your handset with apps and content is increasingly important.”
Internet connection
A growing number of consumers now have phones with internet and email connections, such as the iPhone or BlackBerry, and analysts Gartner estimate that by 2012 more than half the handsets sold will be smartphones.
The rise of social networking is believed to be one of the most important reasons why smartphones and apps are so popular. Current ad campaigns from mobile brands such as Vodafone, Samsung and Orange play on this, communicating that you can use Facebook, Twitter or access the BBC’s content using their services or tariffs.
Consumers are no longer thinking that they need the latest phone; they want a handset that is able to give them the largest social presence.
“Consumers are starting to base their purchase criteria on questions like ’what can I do on my device?’ and ’what kinds of content can I access on my device?’,” says Yap at TNS.
“When you take away the cost barrier of smartphones, content and apps rockets up in terms of importance.”
Even the cost barrier is likely to have less effect in coming years as more mobiles adopt smartphone technology. With Google’s Android software now available on a variety of mid- to high-tier handsets, access to apps is available to more consumers than ever.
Just having the latest, greatest app isn’t allimportant to people, however. The ease of carrying out actions on a device continues to be very important to consumers. Yap says that brands must ensure they match new social technology with usability.
Indeed, 30% of people say easily navigating the phone’s options is of paramount importance to them. This is seen as more important than having safe and fast internet access wherever you are (20%) and storing and listening to music (17%).
Yap identifies a typical consumer as someone who doesn’t want to have to read the manual in order to operate their handset and doesn’t want to have to be a geek - they just want to be able to do things with the technology on their phone.
The most successful brands manage to get right this mix of making things easy and offering the latest and greatest technology, he says. In mobiles, the iPhone has been the breakthrough product in this area because it seems to have made an impact with all demographics. It has helped mobiles reposition themselves as devices for not only making calls but as address books, contact lists and entertainment providers.
Yap says Apple is not the only brand good at this. He points to Google’s search engine tool, on which the company has built its empire. He points out that the relatively simplistic idea of Facebook, befriending people online, has helped the company dominate the social network space.
The easier and more intuitive a manufacturer makes its device, the more they are likely to retain their audience, according to the TNS research.
Ease of use becomes especially important for older users and women. Thirty-four per cent of women and 38% of people over the age of 46, for example, want an intuitive user interface and say “easily navigating the options on my phone” are important.
Importance of content
The difficulty for technology brands this year will be making sure those consumers who have not been early adopters of smartphones and apps
understand their relevance. For apps to reach the majority of consumers, mobile operators and handset manufacturers must sell the idea of the importance of content.
“Some really transformational changes are happening in the category in terms of both what consumers are doing and how they approach purchasing,” says Yap. “The secrets of success are getting your brand position and point of differentiation right, standing for something that resonates with consumers, creating a buzz and going to market in a compelling way.”

Apps and content are undeniably important. We are very excited about multitasking mobile devices and have launched eight Android handsets in 20 countries - this year we expect to launch 20 in total.
Consumers are bombarded by lots of different features on their phones, but the key thing they want is flexibility. They want their phone growing with them. This means they want apps that are relevant to different parts of the day or lifestages, such as a babyfeeding or wedding planner app.

Apps are key to younger consumers, who expect to be able to interact with web properties from any device. Furthermore, they expect a more integrated experience on a device with a built-in camera and address book. So if an app like Facebook doesn’t do what they expect on one device, they may look to another, especially as increasingly more communication is done on Facebook and Skype than via voice and SMS.
There are huge opportunities for handset manufacturers to capitalise on this hunger by
addressing some of the shortcomings of apps on other devices such as those on the iPhone. If Samsung or Nokia were to work with popular app developers to deliver superior versions for their devices, then consumers would have even more reasons to look beyond the iPhone for apps.

While it is easy for those of us working in our industry to assume everyone has an iPhone and manages their lives through apps, it is important to remember that the majority of consumers never access online data services through their phones. However, that fact is turned on its head among the under 30-year-olds, the majority of whom now use their handsets to access content.
The paradigm of “ease of use” is shifting. More people now have greater access to devices geared up to their communication needs. Handsets that performed the iPhone’s functions were available long before Apple launched its much-lauded device, but the genius of the iPhone was to bring all of those capabilities together into an intuitive, desirable device that made sophisticated mobile technology accessibleand pleasurable to use.
Brand is still very important. At the base level, consumers still want the reassurance of a brand offering familiarity, reliability, trust and compatibility with accessories and other communication devices. Beyond that, consumers are motivated by their perception of how a particular brand’s devices will perform, will make their lives easier and will fit with their lives both on a functional and emotional level.

There is obviously a lot of truth in the survey, but while content and apps are important in a certain community
of users, the look and feel and the brand of the device is still critical.
It would be wrong for people to put in lots of functionality simply for a handset to sell. Apps will become a common trend. They are not going to make a big difference between brand choices because you are going to see them on all the mainstream brands.
The brand and people’s previous experiences of it are the most important factors in driving a mobile phone purchase. Nokia, Apple, Samsung and Sony Ericsson are important and powerful names. There are attributes associated with a brand such as Apple or Samsung and that gets you onto the consumer’s consideration list.
Technology is just one of the factors that determine purchase. Design is key and when you combine it with ease of use and technology, you have a winning product and a competitive advantage.
